The Bengali Language
Part of the same family as Sanskrit, Urdu, and Hindi, the official and de facto language of Bangladesh and India, Bengali, is spoken by 230 million as a first language and 37 million as a second language. It is the 5th most spoken native language and is the 7th most spoken language based on the number of speakers in the world.
Though its spoken dialects have many varieties, the most commonly used is Modern Standard Bengali. Surprisingly, unlike the various dialects of its language, as a written language, Bengali uses Standard Colloquial Bengali. Outside of Bangladesh and India, Bengali has significant speaking populations in the Middle East, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
