THE BURMESE LANGUAGE
The country of Myanmar is home to over 100 languages. Of those languages, Burmese serves as the official language, and it’s spoken by over 33 million people.
Though Myanmar is geographically the size of Texas, many variations of Burmese exist. There are three main dialects of Burmese: Standard Burmese, Mandalay, and Yangon. Because of the country’s roots in traditional Buddhism, the monastic education system provides uniformity of the Burmese language across regions.
Outside of Myanmar, Burmese is spoken in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, and the United States.
