The Khmer Language
Sixteen million people speak the Khmer language. It is the official language of Cambodia, and is spoken by 1.3 million people in Thailand and more than 1 million people in Vietnam.
Because of the language’s historical influence, several languages like Thai and Lao borrow from it. While it is similar to Thai, in spoken language and writing, Khmer also borrows words from Sanskrit, French, and Chinese.
There are three major dialects of Khmer, of which Central Khmer is the most widely spoken.
