The Nepali Language
There are more than 123 languages spoken as a first language in the country of Nepal. Among these, Nepali, the official language, is spoken by 16 million people, roughly 44% of the population.
Nepali is also one of the official languages in India as well. As a spoken language, it is closely related to Hindi, and heavily influenced by Sanskrit. In written form, Nepali uses the Devanāgarī script, which is also used by Sanskrit, Prākrit, Hindi, and Marathi. Outside of Nepal and India, Nepali is spoken by small populations in Bhutan and Myanmar.
