The Portuguese Language
Estimated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization to be the fastest-growing European language after English, Portuguese is spoken by 250 million native speakers. Another 24 million people speak it as a second language.
Brazil has the largest group of Portuguese speakers, at 205 million and in Latin America, Portuguese is the second-most spoken language, after Spanish. Its worldwide speaking population has allowed it to become the official language not only of Portugal but nine other countries, including Mozambique, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
Both Portuguese vocabulary and its alphabet trace back to Latin roots. Though it utilizes the Latin alphabet, it also uses additional accent marks. Throughout the world, Portuguese speakers reside in Japan, Paraguay, France, and Canada. In the United States, there are 1.2 million people who speak Portuguese.
