The Romanian Language
The official language of Romania, 24-26 million people speak Romanian as their first language. Another 4 million speak it as a second language. Romanian is also the official language of the Republic of Moldova and an official minority language in Ukraine and Hungary.
Like Spanish, Portuguese, French and, Italian, Romanian is a romance language and is most closely related to Italian. As a written language, its alphabet has 31 letters and utilizes the Latin alphabet. Because of the popularity of the Roman Orthodox Church, the Romanian language contains prominent influences of Old Slavonic, the church’s liturgical language, for its vocabulary. Outside Romania, immigrants have created speaking communities in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Spain, Canada, and the United States.
