The Tagalog Language
Though many consider this language synonymous with its standardized form, Filipino, Tagalog is one of the official languages of the Philippines. Tagalog draws from several languages like Spanish, English, Sanskrit, and Arabic.
There are 28 million people who speak Tagalog as a first language, and 45 million more who speak it as a second or even third language. Outside of the Philippines, there are large speaking communities in the United Kingdom, Guam, the Arab Emirates, Canada, and the United States. In the United States, more than 1.6 million people speak Tagalog, and it’s the fifth most commonly spoken non-English language, behind Spanish, French, Chinese, and Hindi.
