The Thai Language
As the official language of Thailand, Thai is spoken by 20 million people (about 30% of the population) as a first language. Another 40 million people speak Thai as a second language.
Nearly half the vocabulary is borrowed or derived from Sanskrit, Mon, Pali, and Old Khmer, and in written form, uses Sukhothai. This script was developed out of Khmer and has no spaces between words.
Outside of Thailand, speaking groups exist in the Midway Islands, Singapore, Northern Malaysia, Cambodia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.
