The Urdu Language
The national language of Pakistan and one of the official languages of India, Urdu is spoken as a native language by 68 million people. Another 101 million people speak it as a second language.
A variety of Hindustani, both Urdu and Hindi, are considered standard registers of the same language and share grammar and core vocabulary. Despite Urdu’s similarities with Hindi, in written form, it uses the Nastaliq style of the Persian alphabet and relies on Arabic and Persian for its vocabulary.
Though the majority of its speakers live in India and Pakistan, they also live in Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
